Whenever we hear the word diet, it automatically brings out resistance. We want to eat like everyone else and we don’t see why we should have to change. Although it can be important because of the risk factors we have for heart disease, diabetes and more, we still have a difficult time staying with any diet.

Don’t despair if this sounds like you because it is natural human instinct to feel this way. We don’t like being told what to do and we hate feeling like we are depriving ourselves of something we want.

The good news is that this is all in our head. Many of the Anonymous recovery groups call this “stinkin’ thinkin’ ” and it happens any time we have to stay away from something that is harmful to us.

What is more important is to look at the situation and see what it is we hate about it and try to fix it in our heads. For some people having to control the portions they eat makes them crazy. It takes up time and it can be embarrassing out in public. This is one way to look at it.

Another way to look at it is to tell yourself that you are taking action to better your health. Instead of seeing it as a chore, you can look at it as an opportunity to develop yourself in the way you want. As an example, you might have a goal weight that you want to get to so you can wear a certain type of clothing. Make that your primary thought instead of the problems you have with it.

Think about the fact that portion control and eating are a fact of life for everyone who wants to be healthy. As an example, athletes, people involved in fitness and even actors and actresses care about fitness. They do portion control because it helps them stay healthy. Singers like Cher, Tina Turner and others take their time when they eat and make sure they eat the right foods.

If this is good enough for them, then who are we to say that it is something that is not good for us? Thinking about your needs for yourself is another way to make sure, that portion control is a positive situation instead of a negative one.

Portion control is an important aspect of most people’s diets if they want to be healthy.

Tricks to Manage Portion Control When You Have Diabetes

Today it is difficult to practice portion control when you are out and about in the world. Most restaurants serve large portions and the food isn’t always that good.

There are some tricks that can help you understand your portion size a bit easier. One of the first things to do is keep a food journal. You can keep this only for a couple of weeks, but the purpose is to see what you are eating now. Be honest with yourself and write down all the things you eat to see where you are getting your food from.

Once you have written everything down you can go back over the list and see whether you have enough fruits and vegetables in your diet. If not, you can add more. While you are working on finding your portion control ideas keep track of foods like cereals and pastas. Measure them out so that you know how much you are eating of them too. It may surprise you that you are eating more than you need to in some situations.

Some experts say that you should try and visualize your plate. On one side of it you should put vegetables with no starch, on a quarter you should have your carbohydrates and on the other quarter you should have lean meat or other lean protein. This can be difficult to understand.

Another idea is to use a Meal Measure because it already has the portions calculated for you so all you have to do is put it on your plate an fill it. This can be an easier way to “visualize your plate.”

When you are learning portion control it is a good idea to serve everyone a plate of food instead of serving it family style. When you serve large bowls of food on the table it makes it more difficult to stay within your specified portions, especially when everyone else is eating freely. Those who want more can always go back to the kitchen and fill their plates again.

A fun way to eat when you go out to a restaurant is to eat a lot of soup or salad since it has free refills and then share an entre with your friend. Many restaurants will split it before they bring it out if you tell them that is what you want to do. When you share it cuts down on the restaurant bill too!

Master Portion Control for Better Health

Size does matter in some situations and with portion control it is very important. Each person has a different need that they must understand in order to make sure that they do not overeat.

One challenge that Americans face is that we are inundated with lots of food everywhere we go. We get very large portions of food at most restaurants, and we get the smrgsbord when we go to the “all you can eat” restaurant. Nothing about our world says small when it comes to eating.

In days gone by, you could see exactly what a portion looked like because the media was showing you in some way. Today, you only get the Food Pyramid or the Glycemic Index to tell you exactly what you are to eat, but not necessarily the portion size.

This then begs the question, “What is the right portion?” The question has many answers and there are many ways to see what a portion is like. According to the organization, AARP, there are several ways to visualize a portion size. They have created a list that tells you great ways to identify a portion (click on the link for a full list). As an example, one cup of salad greens looks like a baseball. If you know what a baseball looks like, you can roughly get a “ball” full of salad greens.

This is an interesting way to see portions and it is a good way to eyeball them. Another way to visualize portions is through the use of a Meal Measure. This handy device actually can be placed on your plate and food is then placed in appropriate spaces. This is great for teaching children and for adults who do not want to worry about correct portion size.

Keep in mind that portion control is different for each person and the best way to see where to start may be to talk to a nutritionist. This individual is trained to understand foods, their preparation and how to control their portions. A good nutritionist can help you set up a food plan and then help you with recipes for your specific needs.

As you begin to control your portions and you include a variety of fruits and vegetables into your diet, you will automatically become healthier. The next point will be to find a type of exercise you like and then start to do it regularly.
