          Estrogens in Plastic Bottles: Are They Affecting Boys?

          Plastics containing synthetic estrogens have been emasculating our boys (and bringing precocious puberty to our girls), along with some other factors, according to family physician and research psychologist Leonard Sax. These plastics are found in bottles holding soda, water, and other beverages.

          Sax lists five major factors contributing to an epidemic of underachievement among boys and men, in his 2007 book “Boys Adrift.” One of the five major factors is synthetic estrogen from plastic bottles, including baby bottles, and also baby toys and pacifiers. Bottles with a recycling number of 1 are mostly to blame. These all contain phthalates and BPA, synthetic estrogens that soften the plastic and make it great for making bottles.

          Scientists are aware that BPA and phthalates are environmental estrogens. But they don’t agree on how much is a harmful dose. The industry conducted animal studies looking for cancer. Acceptable limits are based on the dose causing cancer in those animal studies.

          But Sax brings up another point: what is the effect on a male, taking estrogen? Bottled water became popular 10 or 15 years ago, and meanwhile the soft drink manufacturers switched from aluminum cans to plastic bottles. So in effect we are all part of a vast experiment on this question, of what is the effect of taking estrogen on a male. Aside from the cancer question, Sax suggests that it’s causing young males to lose motivation (and enter puberty later).

          The result of this, along with four other factors, is affecting a population of men who haven’t grown up, says Sax. He cites some interesting studies. One looks at men in the age group of 35 to 40. Normally, men this age are married. In fact, only 25 years ago, only 8 percent of American men in this age group had never married. But as of 2006 that 8 percent had nearly tripled. It was up to 22 percent and still rising rapidly. (He cites Eduardo Porter and Michelle O’Donnell, “Facing Middle Age with No Degree and No Wife,” New York Times, Aug. 6, 2006.)

          Other studies showed the proportion of men under 35 who never left home has doubled in the past 30 years. Also, 36 percent of babies born in 2004 in the U.S. were born to single women. That’s single women of all demographic categories.

          Congress, through the Consumer Product Safety Commission, is banning phthalates from products sold for use by children under 12 as of August, 2009. This includes baby bottles and pacifiers.

          However, the Food and Drug Administration controls food and drink and its containers. It has decided to believe 11 industry-funded studies showing that BPA is safe, in small amounts. But there are 104 independent studies that show it is a hazard, according to Catherine Zandonella, MPH, in the online magazine The Green Guide.

          A safe consumer will avoid plastic bottles, especially ones where the beverage has been allowed to get warm (allowing the chemical to leach into the beverage more quickly). The acid in soda performs this function as well. Especially look for plastic bottles with a recycling number of 1, 3, or 7. These are the main culprits. In addition, don’t warm your food in plastic containers.

          The epidemic of men and boys who don’t grow up has four other causes as well, as seen by Sax:

          * Education system changes. Kindergarten has become a very frustrating time for boys, who are expected to sit down and learn to read. They aren’t ready, and as a result they learn to hate school.

          * Video games

          * ADHD medications

          * A scarcity in our culture of traditions for transition to manhood

              Struggling through drug addiction or alcoholism is terrible. I know - I’ve been there. It fills you with all sorts of really horrible emotions - guilt, shame, you don’t always feel ‘fully-human’ sometimes - and so this can make you feel especially misunderstood and lonely.

              One of the big issues around having alcoholism or drug addiction, is the fact that even though they are widely regarded as a disease in medical circles, there are lots of people who just don’t agree or see it that way. You certainly wouldn’t get the same response from people, as if you were to come out with cancer for example, where you’d be given a lot more encouragement and support.

              By admitting to an addiction, many people will think you’re simply weak, have no self control and have serious issues. That’s why I reckon denial is such a massive issue for so many alcoholics and drug addicts - because admitting that kind of problem almost means you’re admitting you’re weak and a failure.

              Of course in your mind then its far better to believe your alcohol and drug abuse is under control - because of course you don’t want to admit to being a ‘failure,’ or at least have others think that of you. There’s a huge stigma attached to being seen as an addict - and who wants that? - so it’s about mental self-preservation at the end of the day as much as anything.

              That’s why it becomes so important to understand what you’re dealing with, know what your options are and how to get the best possible help you need. And you needn’t worry about people you don’t want to finding out anything -because you can get the best possible help you need that will keep your dignity and privacy in-tact.

              But like with any illness - the worst thing you can do is to do nothing. The longer you leave it, the worse it gets. And that applies to you whether you’re reading this as someone who has a drug or alcohol problem - or a family member/friend of one.

                When a Mom with an Illness is in Your Playgroup

                Mommy moments come in all forms of days at the park, birthday parties with streamers, and gymnastics classes. All of these provide the perfect opportunity for mothers to let their little ones burn some energy as well as share in their latest challenges. As the amount of women who live with chronic illnesses such as diabetes and rheumatoid arthritis, continues to grow, however, so does the ability to always participate in these spontaneous mommy moments.

                For example, the National Fibromyalgia Association reports that fibromyalgia (FM) experts estimate that about 10 million Americans and approximately 5 percent of the population worldwide deal with illness symptoms commonly associated with FM, one of the fastest growing auto-immune diseases in the USA. When I recently went to an adoptive mom’s playgroup, just within this niche group, three out of the six of the women there lives with a chronic illnesses. Being aware of what a friend can and cannot do, and acknowledging that you know some days will have different limitations and challenges, can make a significant impact in these mom’s ability to participate and feel comfortable with other mothers.

                [1]. Don’t be hesitant to ask what time of the day is best for play-dates or activities. For someone with a chronic illness, this will vary from season to season (weather can impact it a lot); and also from one illness to another. For some moms, mornings are good and afternoons are exhausting; for others it’s the other way around. Heat combined with illness can make it impossible for a chronically ill mom to even be outside for long.

                [2] Be adaptable and don’t make her feel guilty if she must cancel your plans. When one lives with a chronic illness, one never knows what may change moment to moment. For example, last week I just took a normal step, but it resulted in my knee being locked up for four days. Despite all the medications and therapies, all my plans had to be cancelled and my husband tried to pick up the pieces of my son’s schedule while he also worked from home.

                [3] Ask her to clarify what she’s comfortable doing. For example, you might say, “How far do you want to walk today?” and try to accommodate. Even though you can see the park from your house two blocks away, she may not be bale to make it. Stairs may be impossible, and I won’t even take escalators any more because of my knees, so take the elevator with her. Walk at her pace, recognizing that she may have to take rest stops every few minutes even though you’ve only walked fifty feet. Do her a huge favor and chase after her kids for a few minutes. Standing for longer than a couple minutes may also be a challenge. Despite the pain of walking, it’s better for me than standing. Even though the line at the carousel looks like it’s only five minutes, she may need you to offer to stand in line and then let her jump in beside you at the last minutes.

                [4] Show some interest in what she deals with but ask politely. For example, say, “What is your greatest challenge?” Avoid sharing with her about the many cures you’ve heard about on TV and in the magazines for her illness; don’t try to sell her products from your trunk that will cure here overnight; and don’t think that it will encourage her to hear about your mother’s cousin’s sister who has the same illness but still manages to raise four children and work a midnight shirt at the local hospital because she “refuses to give in her illness.”

                [5] Simple things that may be difficult for her. For example, if you go to the beach, ask her if she’d like to be dropped off with some stuff and save you a spot. She may not be able to plop down on the hard sand so remember to bring a few lawn chairs so she isn’t the only one two feet above the others. Most people on medication need shade and limited sun exposure. And don’t expect her to carry the cooler, the poodle, the beach toys and watch the twin 2-year-olds while you park the car. While you don’t want to make her feel helpless, and she doesn’t want the attention, be aware that she may need some extra considerations.

                [6] Don’t assume that she can take care of your children unless she volunteers. Watching kids is exhausting and just taking care of her own may be all she can handle for the moment. Plus, if your kids play in the street, when a car comes she’s not going to be able to jump three tricycles and sprint to grab their little hands nearly as fast as you could.

                [7] Plan activities that she can be a part of. While you may love your stroller exercise groups, and mommy and me gym classes, these may not be possible for her. Find out what types of things she likes to do and then ask if you can join her for these. Keep the activities under two or three hours; even though you may typically go to the zoo for six hours, understand that she may need to leave earlier than you. Don’t say, “A little more walking may do you some good!”

                [8] Lastly, tell her what every mom longs to hear: “I don’t know how you do it. I really admire your perseverance and strength. You’re my hero.
